Portfolio shoot with Melisa

April 22, 2015  •  1 Comment

This shoot nearly didn’t happen!  I had a very strong concept and had booked the services of a great MUA and a very good hairstylist.  The look for the shoot was going to be very avant grade with a high fashion feel to the lighting/posing.  Melisa, a fantastic local model, agreed to work TFP and offered to bring a great selection of outfits.  Finally, I booked time at a local studio as I wanted a controlled environment.  I sent out mood boards and we were all set….

My MUA cancelled in the week leading up to the shoot.  This will often happen when people work TFP but it’s still a shame.  I started to look for a replacement and then received an email from the hair stylist saying she was double booked and so needed to cancel.  Two people in one week?  Unbelievable.   A hairstylist and MUA can make a good shoot GREAT so I was going to cancel the shoot if I couldn’t find replacements.

It was all so VERY last minute when Candice, a MUA from the south coast, very kindly offered to help out!!   I had to shelve the original concept (as there was no time to get Candice up to speed) so I simply used the model’s wardrobe for a beauty/fashion shoot.  I’m very please with the images and had a great day.  Melisa and Candice where both outstanding!  We braved the freezing temperatures and worked outside for the first set of images.  We then retreated inside to the warmth of the studio.  :)

I used my new hot shoe ring-flash and was really pleased with the results.  Output is limited but this can easily be corrected with ISO and aperture.  I borrowed a Godox battery pack to power the ring flash.  This external battery meant that flash recycle times were incredibly quick so we could shoot in a very loose style.  Perfect.  I’d recommend picking up one of these packs (£60 from Amazon) as they make speedlites feel much more like strobes.

Big thanks go to Richard James Studio for making us feel so welcome.  :)
